We have no reason to believe in the spiritual independent of physical reality and I find such belief-because it signifies a voluntary abstention from scientific apprehension-ugly and unworthy of a strong human being. But I do believe this on the basis of our incomplete experience of the relations governing here. Whether this connection is complete we cannot know. Only he who has renounced the questions you posed becomes a researcher in the exact sciences… Natural science only deals with physical events, and the spiritual only insofar as it is connected with the physical. The author mentioned a letter in which a Viennese woman, Lily Halpern-Neuda, asked Einstein for his view of the spiritual world and the immortal soul. Quantum theory has been a fascination of mine for many decades.ĭuring the discussion of the book, the question of Einstein’s ideas about spirituality came up in the context of his famous quote about God not playing dice with the universe. I’ve only had a chance to skim through it, but I plan to read it carefully in the near future. Recently I attended a talk by Douglas Stone, the author of Einstein and the Quantum: The Quest of the Valiant Swabian.
